Mazzarri: Why would I want to sell Watford star Deeney?

Watford manager Walter Mazzarri has rubbished claims that he will look to sell star striker Troy Deeney.

Deeney has been crucial for Watford's campaign once again this term but surprisingly, the club skipper was left on the bench for two of the last three matches by Mazzarri and this has led to speculation that the 28-year-old could well be sold by the Hornets for the right price next summer, with West Bromwich Albion said to be interested.

Mazzarri has now gone on to address the future of Deeney and has categorically denied claims that he will look to consider selling his captain anytime soon.

The Italian said: "Why on earth would I want to sell him?

"Troy has only been on the bench three times this season. Many times in the past as a manager I have left my captain on the bench, but every time I have made my decision in the best interests of the team.

"I respect him, he is my captain and my relationship with him doesn't change. Next season I want two strong players for every position, and if Troy accepts the competition, I will be even happier.

"To take this club to a higher level, we will need 22 strong players, so why would I sell one who has always played for me this season?"
