The father of Bayern Munich signing Thiago Alcantara admits a move to Manchester United was close.

Thiago chose Bayern ahead of United earlier this month after deciding to quit Barcelona.

His father Mazinho told La Xarza: "Thiago was close to joining Manchester United this summer, there were talks before the U21 Euro [Championship].

"Thiago is happy. He wanted to leave, Barca accepted it. Guardiola was crucial, he has been very important in Thiago's life."
