Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg was chuffed at the announcement of MLS expansion franchise New York City FC.

Owned by Manchester City and partially by Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees, the second New York side in MLS will kick off in 2015, and Mayor Bloomberg is thoroughly excited.

“It’s another great day for New York,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “Just one thing after another in the last decade.

“It really has changed New York City, and it’s given us the venues for lots of different events. And hopefully we’ll get a soccer stadium. I’m sure we will, and that will give us another place to have great events.”

He added: “Teams always bring great economic benefits. Sports are a big thing in a lot of peoples’ lives and certainly soccer is one of the biggest things.”
