German legend Lothar Matthaus insists Liverpool fans should be happy with the work of manager Jurgen Klopp.

Matthaus wrote for The Sun: "I know some people are questioning Jurgen Klopp and saying they thought he would do better after what he achieved at Dortmund.

"But the situation at the two clubs is completely different.

"You cannot expect Liverpool, who play in a strong Premier League with six or seven high-level clubs, to be as competitive as Dortmund were in the Bundesliga, when it was just between them and Bayern Munich.

"Klopp had seven years at Dortmund. Most of those were up-times. It was only in the last season where they didn't start well and it fell away.

"In terms of the way he's built his team it is similar — but he doesn't have the same players.

"I think he has made a great job of it. He knows in the Premier League you have to play every game at a higher pace than in Germany."
