Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi has suffered a serious injury in the Champions League loss to Werder Bremen overnight. The Italian World Cup winner was substituted at half time with a fractured cheekbone after being on the end of an elbow to the face.

However with the Christmas break only two weeks away, Materazzi could be back in action in time for the first round of 2009 on January 7.
