Mata opener psychologically important for Man Utd says Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho thinks that Juan Mata's goal was psychologically important for United in their 3-1 win over Bournemouth.

The Red Devils had found it hard to trouble the Cherries' defence before Mata scored the opening goal in the 40th minute of the game, courtesy of a poor backpass from Simon Francis and subsequent lucky deflection.

Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic added to the tally in the second half to put the game out of reach for the home side who pulled one back through Adam Smith the it was all too late.

Mourinho said: "One goal changes the picture as in the beginning of the second half they tried to put more pressure on us, which opened more spaces.

"The opening goal is always important – it doesn't mean you win the match but on a psychological level it brings the confidence up and the team could play very well in the second half."
