Manchester City chief Brian Marwood insists they want more local talent to come their youth system.
City have announced £100million plans for a new academy and club headquarters.
It is 24 years since City saw Ryan Giggs famously snatched from their grasp by neighbours Manchester United despite having the 14-year-old winger at their school of excellence, and Marwood is determined to ensure they can match the allure of Old Trafford in future.
"I find it incredible when I look at the size of Manchester and the outlying areas, that we've only had one player in Nedum Onuoha who's come through from the age or 10 or 11," said Marwood. "I find that a damning statistic in terms of developing young talent. And I think if you look at the surrounding areas, there is talent there.
"United have bought in talent as well. But there is the example of Ryan Giggs who was at our academy and ended up at United, so there's something not quite right."
