Martinez resigns as Wigan manager

Roberto Martinez has resigned as Wigan Athletic manager.

The Spaniard met with chairman Dave Whelan at an emotional lunchtime meeting to discuss his future having spent time making his mind up over the bank-holiday weekend while visiting family in Barcelona.

Martinez has turned down Liverpool and Aston Villa in the past and is now likely to replace David Moyes, who has moved to Manchester United, at Everton.
