Martinez praise for maiden Everton goalscorer Stones

Everton boss Roberto Martinez was delighted for John Stones after he scored his first Premier League goal for the club on Sunday.

The 20-year old defender lost his marker to powerfully head home from the front post in the 35th minute of his side's 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Goodison Park.

The goal came between James McCathy's opener and Kevin Mirallas' late third and opened Stones' Toffees account in the process.

"John deserves his moment because scoring his first goal is a memory he is going to treasure," the Everton manager said.

"The boys were giving him a hard time because he only scores in training. His defensive display was his best since he was playing in the first team."

Stones joined Everton from Barnsley in January 2013 and has since made 40 league appearances for the Merseyside club.
