Martinez pays respect to Wigan chief Whelan

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez paid his respect to club owner Dave Whelan following the 3-1 home win over the previously high-flying Chelsea.

The Spanish tactician dedicated the great victory to Whelan, who he said was the reason for Wigan being in England's top flight.

"I saw him after the game and he had a big smile on his face, he was very proud," said the Latics boss.

"Mr Whelan is a man of very few words, but they are very intense and he was delighted for everyone.

"I'm just proud to be manager of Wigan. But we're in the Premiership because of Mr Whelan and he deserves a day like this.

"It's one of those challenges. Success is going to be staying in the Premiership and improving as a football club - having that long-term ambition.

"But for a chairman, when you put all that money and all that effort in, these are the moments that you enjoy. I hope it's a nice memory for him."
