Martinez knows Wigan job safe even if relegated

Roberto Martinez says he's been assured of his job at Wigan Athletic - even if they're relegated.

The Spaniard has been told by chairman Dave Whelan that his job is safe regardless of whether Wigan win or lose their battle to stay in the Premier League.

Martinez, a former Wigan player, said: "I'm privileged, I've always said that.

"My chairman is unique. He's very demanding and ruthless when he has to be, but he allows you to work.

"He has said to me that whatever happens I'm going to stay until the end of my contract.

"That allows me to work long term and gives me the football club stability."

Martinez, who guided Swansea to the League One championship in his first managerial role, added: "The players also know that, whatever happens, they have to put up with the manager next season.

"Sometimes we give players too much power. It's two bad results and clubs sack the manager. It's a shame when players have that kind of control.

"Dave Whelan has given me his full support in the time I have been manager and I'm going to go that extra mile to make him happy and make him proud."
