Everton boss Roberto Martinez says Sylvain Distin can win a new deal.
The French veteran's current contract expires in June.
Martinez said: "Like any other player it's just making sure you're a positive influence every day and that you're an influence on the pitch and I think that's what he's done.
"Earlier on in the season it was difficult for us as a team defensively. "We don't highlight the back four because defensive duties need to be shared and we weren't focusing enough.
"But now he is ready to fight and have a memorable season.
"Last season was phenomenal from him to help us have 15 clean sheets.
"To have the influence he has starting play and his commanding displays.
"He still has that in abundance.
"What you get with Sylvain is that sometimes people look at his age and you've got comments about that but that's not right.
"He's young in football terms because of the way he looks after himself and works in the gym.
"I think now he has got the challenge back and is ready to fight for his place.
"His performance against Lille showed you he isn't just going to accept not playing. We need him in the squad.
"We need the competition for places."
