Everton boss Roberto Martinez has hailed the influence of veteran Gareth Barry on their play.

The stand-in skipper delivered a defensive midfield masterclass against Aston Villa, covering more ground than anyone else in the English top-flight last Saturday.

“Gareth has taken over the armband and has given a really calm feeling about our performances," Martinez said. “He never panics and for our young players that's very important.

“Once you get to know Gareth inside out, [you realise] that he is the most consistent footballer you are going to get in a dressing room. That's down to his character.

“I've said it many times - I always feel safe and confident of giving young players an opportunity because I know there are players like Gareth Barry, with know-how and experience, in the side."
