Martinez: Barkley can be Everton legend

Everton boss Roberto Martinez feels Ross Barkley can become an all-time club great.

Martinez believes Barkley will be talked about in future club history in the same breath as the legendary Alan Ball.

He said: "I have never seen a young man with things so clear in his mind. A boy so humble and someone who won't have his head turned by fame.

"This was an important contract but there is a lot of room for him to develop and become an even more important player. Earning riches won't bother Ross.

"It's not hard for youngsters to get carried away. It is normal and it is our fault in many ways. We make them believe they are something special at a very young age.

"And that is something difficult for a young man to come to terms with. I see Ross working every day. He came back from the World Cup and it seemed that the World Cup never happened to him.

"He was working even harder than before he left. He didn't come back from Brazil with a swagger. He takes responsibility for himself with a real enjoyment.

"And there have been enough times now to know that it would take something out of the norm to disrupt him from the path that he is on.

"He lives at home with his mum at the moment and he has a good balance in his life. He loves playing football and being at home, too.

"He is a young man but he does everything in moderation with the real focus of knowing that the next day he will be on the football pitch training.

"He has an incredible balance to his life but I am sure that will be tested in the next few years and we have to make sure that we are all around him to help whenever that is needed."
