Marseille signing Dimitri Payet: West Ham? I don't need to justify myself!

Marseille signing Dimitri Payet has taken a parting shot at West Ham.

The French midfielder rejoined the Ligue 1 side on a four-and-a-half-year deal after Marseille shelled out £25million to bring him back to the Stade Velodrome.

Speaking in a news conference following his move, Payet said: “It's what I wanted. It was clear from the start.

“Thanks to all the staff for doing what was needed. I wanted to be part of this project that is just getting started. It came at a time when I missed France.

“It was drawn out because I started my stand-off with West Ham a long time ago. If (the move) hadn't gone through I would have lived with it.

“But I didn't feel very good over there. (West Ham boss) Slaven Bilic had his view, but I don't have to justify my behaviour."

Payet went on to claim that the move was not "money orientated", and revealed that if it was, he would have left the Hammers well before he did.

"I've already said it, if I was playing for money I'd have been in another country a long time ago," he added.

"It's not my primary motivation, my motivation is to play football and to enjoy myself on the pitch. But that hasn't stopped me from improving."
