Marseille president Eyraud: Payet took pay-cut to return

Olympique Marseille president Jacques-Henri Eyraud says Dimitri Payet has taken a pay-cut to return to West Ham.

Eyraud also says they handed Payet a long-term deal as they want to build the club's profile around the Frenchman.

He explained: "Dimitri coming here had to accept a significant decrease in his salary. French football suffers from a lack of competitiveness and he made this gesture in a sign of his attachment to OM but also to remain disciplined financially.

"But I will not comment more on the amount of the transfer, West Ham has already done so."

He added: "Why a contract of four and a half years? The project is long term. Dimitri Payet is in the lead. And we would of course be delighted if Dimitri finishes his career at OM. Knowing that he still has many good years ahead of him."
