Marquez will be back at NYRB but will finish career with Atlas

New York Red Bulls expect Rafael Marquez to be back at the club next season and his former club, Mexican outfit Atlas, are confident he will end his career with them.

The ex-Barcelona defender's New York future is reportedly up in the air but general manager Erik Soler is confident the Mexico international will be back at the Red Bull Arena in 2012 despite a frustrating season.

"Rafa will be back," he said.

"We shared our common frustration, both ways. I'm very confident we'll have Rafa Marquez back next season, and he's an excellent athlete, a great player both ways.

"Anybody's career has ups and downs. I'm happy to have him back. I really appreciated what he can bring to us, and I'm thrilled he'll be here."

He has been linked with Atlas this week and although he may not be back there next year, club vice-president Victor Flores Cosio feels he will end his playing days in Guadalajara.

"I am sure that he will arrive. I don't know whether it will be for next season or later, but he will end his career with Atlas," he said.

"Of course I would like to have him here in Atlas, but he is in the United States. We have to talk with the directors, to see if they can make the transfer happen, but I'm not dismissing it."
