Argentina and football legend Diego Maradona says he was embarrassed by his country's performance in the World Cup.

Despite getting out of their group, Argentina fell at the next hurdle in a 4-3 defeat to France.

Maradona was at many of the games as he saw his countrymen fall short against the eventual champions.

He is quoted by The Sun as saying: "I was ashamed.

"It was very sad seeing the Argentina team's aimless wandering.

"Today, Messi is fighting his footballer's heart because he doesn't have anyone to pass the football to.

"I can't blame him at all."
