Manner of win over Tottenham more important than my captaincy - Liverpool's Suarez

Liverpool star Luis Suarez played down the importance of his role as captain in Sunday's 5-0 demolition of Tottenham.

The Reds blew Spurs away at White Hart Lane with stand-in skipper Suarez, in place of the injured Steven Gerrard, doing most of the damage once again.

The Uruguayan scored a brace to take his goal tally to 17 for the Premier League season but says the overall performance of the Liverpool side was the thing that mattered most.

"It was no different because, for me, the only captain here is Stevie," he told Sky Sports.

"Today, I take the band, but I think we played very well and this is more important than the captain.

"I try my best on the pitch. I am a striker and I try every time to score. For today, the most important thing is the performance of the team."

He added: "For the confidence, it's very good and we know in December we have big games now and we knew if we won today against Tottenham we are six points up on them.

"We have two very important games against Manchester City and Chelsea coming up."
