Mandaric to make quick appointment of new Wednesday boss

Sheffield Wednesday chairman Milan Mandaric hopes to name a replacement for sacked Owls boss Gary Megson within the next 24 hours. Wednesday currently sit in third spot in League One, five points adrift of automatic promotion, but Mandaric felt the decision to part with Megson was in the long-term interests of the club.

Former Cardiff City and Wolves boss Dave Jones is the overwhelming favourite for the post at Hillsborough.

"We are trying very hard and hopefully we can announce the new manager in the next 24 hours," Mandaric told Sky Sports News.

"It was always our objective to get out of this league and we have fallen down lately and whoever comes here will have to get us out of this league."

Mandaric also defended his decision to sack Megson despite coming in for widespread criticism for his actions.

"It was very a hard decision but it was the best decision for our supporters," added Mandaric.

"It was not done for me or for anyone else, it was done for the best of the club."
