Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini insists they can win the Premiership this season.
With Tottenham and Liverpool to face in the opening two games, there is little margin for error.
Yet the Italian denies he has put glory hopes at risk, insisting his summer purchases can "change our history".
Indeed, if City can emerge from their testing start unscathed, Mancini sees no reason why his team cannot challenge for their first league title since 1968.
"Why not?" he argued. "We have a chance.
"A lot of teams have spent money in the past to build a good squad and I am sure we have a good team.
"But tomorrow will probably be different. Tottenham have the same players as last year. We are a new team.
"We know that Chelsea and Manchester United are on the top at this moment but the Premier League is very long and if we work well for the next two or three weeks, we have a chance."
