Man Utd's Scholes: Rooney absence no excuse

The midfielder said: "I would think the goals are just around the corner, but we can't take it for granted.

"There are lots of players in the team who can score goals and create them. Hopefully it will all click into place soon. But we'd obviously like to have won at least one of our opening three games."

United will miss broken foot victim Wayne Rooney for the next two months and must cope without banned Cristiano Ronaldo for their next two games.

But Scholes, whose side languish in 16th place, insisted: "It gives those that maybe haven't had the chance to shine an opportunity. We've got a good enough squad."
