Manchester United have reluctantly allowed the club's assistant manager to leave Old Trafford, giving Sir Alex Ferguson little more than a month to bring in a replacement before the new season starts.

Queiroz joined the club in 2002 and had been one of the favourites to replace Ferguson as United boss, but the lure of managing his country for a second time was too much for him to refuse.
