Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes the FA should be asking Sven Goran Eriksson about his thoughts on the next England manager.

Hargreaves said: "Of course Eriksson would have something to contribute if the FA asked him. He was the England manager for more than five years and one of the country's most successful managers, when you look at his qualification record."

Eriksson's replacement after the 2006 World Cup was greeted warmly by impatient England fans but his reputation has since been restored by the job he has done at Manchester City and McClaren's failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

Hargreaves, who will be in the United side to face Fulham tomorrow night, added: "He lost two matches on penalties, which can happen to any manager. It's not as black and white as people think, that great players can automatically go out and win things. People don't understand how hard it is to win games at that level. Everybody would be a manager if it was that easy."
