Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand admits he owes a lot to Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp after he captained England in last night's friendly defeat to France.

"I still speak to Harry on the telephone although I haven't heard from him since the news broke that I was captain," said Ferdinand.

"That's not too surprising, though, because he hasn't mastered texting yet. We'll talk soon, though, and I owe a massive debt to him.

"He had the bottle to put me in the West Ham team as a youngster and set me off on my career. One of the best things he ever did for me was to send me out on loan to Bournemouth.

"I wasn't sure at the time but he stressed that it would be good for me and it was the turning point in my career."
