Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand would like to see former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho in charge of England.

Asked for his thoughts on Mourinho as England manager, Ferdinand told the Daily Star Sunday: "I think that would be good. We need someone who can organise the team into being a success.

"We did not mark ourselves as the 'golden era', yet look at the players who all perform in the top echelon of players around Europe.

"But we can't seem to do that in an England shirt. The players always play well for their clubs but not on a consistent basis for England.

"The next manager needs to change that - it's as simple as that."
