Tom Cleverley hailed Manchester United's defence for victory at Newcastle United.

While Sir Alex Ferguson's attacking plan worked a treat on Tyneside, his backline produced the goods too.

Cleverley said: "Keeping clean sheets is something we have to improve on so to get one at Newcastle is great.

"I thought the defence - Rafael, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Jonny Evans - were absolutely fantastic, especially with the way they had to deal with aerial balls into the box.

"The whole defence, including the keeper, were fantastic and that is a very good clean sheet for us at a difficult place to get one."
