Manchester United will challenge Manchester City for Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala in the summer.
The Daily Star Sunday says United and City are now expected to fight it out for Mangala after the World Cup in Brazil - if the Porto star secures his place in the France squad.
Fergie's successor, David Moyes, wants a centre back with Rio Ferdinand expected to leave for LA Galaxy in the summer and doubts about the future of skipper Nemanja Vidic.
Moyes still has in excess of £100m to spend after the club-record signing of £37.1m Juan Mata from Chelsea.
