Manchester United are watching Toby Alderweireld's contract situation at Tottenham.
The Manchester Evening News says the 28-year-old's contract expires in 18 months but there is the option to extend by another year and United are keeping tabs on the situation.
Next summer a £25million release clause in the centre-back's contract becomes active, adding another dimension to proceedings.
That clause must be triggered no later than two weeks before deadline day.
Jose Mourinho is understood to be prioritising the addition of another midfielder but is also in the market for a central defender.
