Man Utd veteran Giggs: Fans were frustrated when I tried to change my game

Manchester United player-coach Ryan Giggs has spoken of transforming his game during his career.

Giggs admits pressure from United fans was tough as he tried to learn a difficult role.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "I've had a great relationship with the fans. I think they realise I've given my all for United. But yes, you will have dips of form when they question you.

"The time I had most criticism was the around the time I was trying to evolve my game.

"Fans and everyone had seen my growing up as this left winger who beat players but I was having problems with my hamstrings and I could never really run at full tilt as I had become wary of my hamstrings.

"So I was changing from that speedy winger to more of a passing game. It was a transitional period. I was trying to find a new game. It was like starting all over once more.

"It was a hard time for me changing. I had to find a way of still trying to be effective in the first team while not being able to do what I had done before. It was tough.

"I realised I had to find new ways of causing the full-back problems - not just knocking it past him and running.

"I had to be aware more of positional play, things I would never have thought of when I was younger. I started mixing up my positions so the full-back wouldn't know whether it was his job or the centre halves to pick me up.

"I worked on my crossing so that if opponents didn't close me down I could put in a good cross. Next time if they did close me down then I'd take them on.

"I was just constantly trying to better myself. I am glad I did it and changed my game as it gave me so many extra years and so many added experiences. It has been amazing."
