Manchester United veteran Michael Carrick has revealed he wished he'd played with Geordie heroes Peter Beardsley and Paul Gascoigne.

The 35-year-old has played alongside some of the world's best players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But Carrick told MOTD Magazine: "When I was growing up as a kid [Paul] Gascoigne was my idol - Gascoigne and [Peter] Beardsley.

"I just used to love watching them.

"Beardsley was an unbelievable player but Gascoigne for his personality and what he brought to the pitch.

"I got to play against him, only for about 15 minutes when he was at Everton and he went off injured.

"So I wouldn't have minded seeing him up close at his prime when he was at Newcastle or Tottenham."
