Manchester United will not rush Michael Carrick back to action following his return to fitness from an ankle injury.
The 33-year old midfielder has not yet played this season after undergoing ankle surgery but be back for Monday night's trip to West Bromwich Albion.
However, United boss Louis van Gaal says Carrick will not be rushed as he needs to find his groove and improve his match fitness.
"[Carrick] needs match rhythm and, until now, he has not played a match so we have to give him a chance to play a match," said the Dutchman.
"Maybe next Friday with the second squad [against West Ham]. Maybe we'll use him on the bench [on Monday] but I don't know."
