Man Utd striker Rooney tells Man City to forget about Champions League this season

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has wrote off Manchester City's Champions League hopes.

Rooney feels City will be the odd man out when it comes to English clubs progressing to the knockouts.

He told The Sun: "It's frustrating for us because we should have won games like Basel and Benfica here that would have had us through already, but I'm still very confident we will go through OK.

"Looking at Chelsea, you have to fancy them at home to Valencia so that's two more English teams qualified.

"But for City it is out of their hands so you don't know what can happen there. It's their first time in the Champions League and it is very difficult. There's so much more pressure and so much more expectation and there's so many more key games.

"So I think there will be three teams through and we'll go on to show that English teams are as strong as ever."
