Rooney is desperate to face his old rivals Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday - and he is winning the race to be fit for the showdown. But manager Sir Alex Ferguson will not risk his star player in a competition that is third on the list of Old Trafford priorities, no matter what the motivation for Rooney.
After previous disagreements over his fitness, Rooney now will accept his manager's advice and sit out the tie.
Rooney accepts that the immensely experienced Ferguson was right about his injury earlier in the season.
