Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney played in midfield for victory at Stoke City yesterday.

Rooney was more pleased with the three points than his own personal performance.

"I've played there a few times this season and I just had to make sure I got myself back alongside Michael [Carrick] and alongside Rio [Ferdinand] and Vida [Nemanja Vidic] for the second balls," he revealed to MUTV. "And then, when I could, try and get my foot on the ball and break forwards. I thought I managed to do that.

"As a centre-forward, you always look to score goals, but you have to hold yourself back at times and try and do a job for the team, try and help the team keep the ball and move up the pitch together.

"You enjoy it when you win. I think it was a good, disciplined performance by us and when you're on the football pitch, winning games, you always enjoy it."
