Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson hopes to have Ryan Giggs and Michael Carrick available for Saturday's big game with Liverpool. Giggs has been suffering with a hamstring twinge since the Newcastle match on August 17. The 34-year-old Welshman came off against the Geordies when he felt a tightening in his hamstring to limit any damage.
Carrick is also expected to be available after he was forced off against Newcastle following an ankle knock.
His joint swelled and the midfielder had to pull out of England duty.
He has missed the Portsmouth win and the Super Cup defeat to Zenit St Petersburg.
