Manchester United stand by their decision not to meet Ander Herrera's buyout clause in his Athletic Bilbao contract.
The Telegraph says an inquiry was made to Bilbao, and a £26 million bid reportedly offered, but it became clear that United would get Herrera only through meeting the buy-out clause of £30.5 million.
"The fee was too much,'' a United source said. "He's a very good player but not a top, top player.
"To spend too much at the end of the window is something the club are not going to do."
