Manchester United and Tottenham are going head-to-head for Crewe Alexandra youngster Nick Powell.

The Daily Mail says United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and assistant Mike Phelan are understood to be closely monitoring the attacking midfielder, who has been tipped for success at the top.

Powell's rise from Crewe's fabled academy ranks - where the likes of David Platt, Danny Murphy and Dean Ashton once started - has also alerted Tottenham.

Last month, Powell became the first player in Crewe's history to win EVERY prize at the club's end-of-season awards, scooping a total of five prizes.
