Manchester United are in talks today with Sporting CP for William Carvalho.
Lisbon sources say United boss Louis van Gaal had his top talent spotters in the stands to see Sporting's clash with Benfica.
Carvalho is valued at £37million by Sporting, but with a release clause in his contract due to expire next summer, United are hopeful of landing him for significantly less.
United - who are willing to pay around £23m - could force Sporting's hand on deadline day, with the Portuguese club aware they will take a big hit on Carvalho if they wait until next summer to sell him.
