Manchester United are ready to make an offer for Everton fullback Leighton Baines.

The People says Sir Alex Ferguson has targeted the Everton left-back, Ashley Cole's understudy in the national team squad, and is expected to test the Toffees' resolve with an offer.

Goodison chief David Moyes enjoys a good relationship with Fergie, but Everton will demand at least £15million for Baines, who still has three years left on his contract.

But Moyes may also recognise that Baines, 27, has been an excellent servant for five years and that a move to United may represent his best chance of enjoying Champions League football.
