Manchester United skipper Nemanja Vidic is being blamed for Wayne Rooney's head injury, which will keep him out of today's blockbuster at Liverpool.

The Mail on Sunday says Rooney, just back in United’s side after failing to get a move to Chelsea, was caught in the head by a studs-up challenge by Vidic in a competitive training game at the club’s Carrington base on Saturday.

It left the 27-year-old requiring stitches for a gaping wound and he left at lunchtime wearing a giant bandage to cover the prominent scar.

Rooney has a reputation for recovering quickly from knocks and will do everything he can to face Liverpool at Anfield at lunchtime today, but the deepness of the wound means insiders at the club are sceptical whether he can make it and doctors will assess it again before the game.
