Manchester United missed a penalty and crashed to a 1-0 defeat at Premiership new boys Burnley. Burnley were last in the top flight in 1976 and they celebrated their first home game with a sensational win over last season's Champions.

A Robbie Blake strike in the 19th minute proved decisive although the striker turned villain just before the interval when he conceded a penalty in impeding Patrice Evra.
