Man Utd senior players tell Rooney: We want you to stay

Manchester United senior players have told Wayne Rooney they want him to stay. Rooney made his first appearance in a United shirt since the end of last season, playing for half an hour as a substitute in his team's 4-1 win at Swansea.

After the game, team-mates were at pains to assure him he remains a vital and valued part of the squad, says the Daily Mail.

The United striker, who has been trying to force a move to Chelsea all summer, was given a good reception by travelling fans and midfielder Michael Carrick said afterwards that everybody hopes Rooney will stay.

"I thought he came on and looked good," said Carrick. "He set up two goals and that's what he's all about. He's a real threat.

"He got a bit of a whack when he made Danny Welbeck's second but I'm sure he'll be all right.

"He's a big Manchester United player. He's one of us and we all stick together. When we're on the pitch we fight for each other and do what we can for Wayne. He's certainly part of that

"He's given this club an awful lot so the fans support him and we support him. As I said, we stick together. It was a good day."
