Man Utd's Giggs grateful for Real Madrid ovation

Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs admits it was a strange moment when the Real Madrid supporters gave him a standing ovation last month.

United forced a 1-1 draw with Real at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League Round of 16 first leg three weeks ago and despite the battle, Welshman Giggs was treated to applause from the locals for his career which sees him set to make his 1,000th appearance on the return bout on Tuesday night.

"It was strange," said Giggs. "As I was going on to the pitch, my concentration was fully on doing well for the team and trying to make an impact.

"I did recognise what happened but I only really thought about it afterwards.

"I thank the Madrid fans for the welcome they did give me. It was something special."
