Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher will travel with the Scotland squad to the USA later this month.
The Scots take on the US in Florida on May 26 and Fletcher will be with the group in a non-playing role as he continues to overcome a chronic bowel problem.
"If he's fit and available he'll join us - if not he won't. He sounds in good spirits and if anyone's going to get over this it's him because he's as strong a character as I've met in football - a real man.
"He's been working with this problem for three or years now.
"He's only coming along because I want to keep him part of the group.
"I wouldn't normally take an injured player or one that was ill on a trip but there are two reasons he's different.
"One, it will help the squad as he's our captain and they'd love to see him and catch up with him and two, because it will do him some good to get back with the boys.""The plan is for him to travel if he's okay. I speak with him regularly and the arrangement is I've kept him a place," said Scotland manager Craig Levein.
