Man Utd's Ferguson hails milestone man Scholes

Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken highly of Paul Scholes after the veteran midfielder scored in his 700th appearance for Manchester United today.

The 37-year old opened the scoring in the 51st minute as the Red Devils overcame a tardy start to beat Wigan Athletic 4-0 at Old Trafford and his performance was not lost on Ferguson who loves the way Scholes gets deep into the attacking third.

Ferguson also praised young midfielder Nick Powell who came on as a second-half substitute to score his first goal for United.

"Paul over his career has always been fantastic at that," Ferguson told Sky Sports about Scholes' close range tap-in.

"Remembering him as a central midfielder who could go in the box all the time, but obviously over the years we've used him more as a controlling central midfield player, and there is no one better at what he did today.

"Young Powell is a player that we hope that fills Scholes' boots in terms of he has terrific vision, a good temperament, great feet, he's quick and is a good striker of the ball.

"He scored a really good goal today and it's a good start. He's only 18 and is not 19 until next March, so I'm very pleased with him."
