Manchester United are believed to be pondering a January move for Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels.
The Guardian reports that United boss Louis van Gaal is considering making a British record offer for a defender for the 25-year old German centre-back.
Despite comments from chief executive Ed Woodward yesterday that there would be no new players walking in the Old Trafford doors in the winter, the Red Devils continue to be linked with a quality central defender.
Hummels, who was arguably the best defender at the 2014 World Cup, would cost United more than the £32million that Manchester City paid for Eliaquim Mangala last summer which is the Premier League record for a defender.
United showed considerable interest in Dortmund skipper Hummels during the summer transfer window but were unsuccessful in their pursuit.
