Manchester United remain in the hunt for Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.
The London Evening Standard says there may be developments as early as this week as United step up interest in the Germany international.
Schweinsteiger, who played under Van Gaal when the Dutchman was at Bayern between 2009-2011, has just 12 months to run on his current deal at the Allianz Arena and could reportedly leave Pep Guardiola's side for a cut-price £7million this summer.
Meanwhile, Morgan Schneiderlin of Southampton is being lined up as Van Gaal's alternative deep lying midfielder if Schweinsteiger snubs a move to Old Trafford.
It is understood Schweinsteiger is United's number one target in that position but if he opts against a reunion with United's Dutch boss, Schneiderlin would be seen as another strong addition to the midfield.
