Manchester United duo Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones have been named in the England U21 squad to face Azerbaijan and Israel next month.
The pair were widely tipped to be included in Fabio Capello's senior squad for Euro2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales but their inclusion in Stuart Pearce's 27-man group suggests that is now unlikely.
Pearce has also selected Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong, Everton teenager Ross Barkley and Liverpool right-back John Flanagan amongst his charges for the qualifiers for the 2013 UEFA European U21 Championship Finals.
