Louis van Gaal insists it is not a certainty that Manchester United are set to buy a new striker.

The Dutch tactician indicated to the press in the USA this week that perhaps there is a 'secret' signing on the cards for the Red Devils.

Many outlets have speculated regarding who those players could be with Juventus striker Fernando Llorente and Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller both frequently mentioned but van Gaal has backtracked on his comments, suggesting the media took it out of context.

"I don't know if I want to buy a striker," he said after United defeated San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 on Tuesday.

"I have read in the media the striker is the surprise.

"No, that's not what I said. But you are saying that. No, I mean something else."

United will now prepare for their next 2015 International Champions Cup clash which takes place against European champions Barcelona at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara on the weekend.
